The Spirex Aquatec - Option Range are upflowing, which is more efficient by design. The Option Range have pointed cone bottoms for more efficient waste removal. Flat bottomed "cones" always leave a residue. The Option Range has 4 outlets which allow connection in a variety of formats (parallel, series, etc.) giving greater flexibility and efficiency. It can be use with many type of filter media, however, Springflo filter media is highly recommended.
